Teaching Assistant Program


Opportunities are available for selected individuals to work with and learn from our instructors by serving as teaching assistants in our Intermediate Certificate classes. Teaching assistants help set up, pour wines and clean up. Teaching assistants receive a discounted course rate. These positions, limited in number, are generally filled a month in advance of the course. Admission is on a rolling basis. Midwest Wine School

WSET: Take Your Wine Knowledge To The Next Level

Founded in 1969, the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) (www.wset.co.uk) is one of the most trusted and internationally-recognized wine and spirit education programs. Currently the program is available in over 47 countries in 13 languages.

Completion of all levels of the WSET program, which includes passing the Intermediate, Advanced and Diploma levels, is the structured path highly recommended by the Institute of Masters of Wine for individuals interested in achieving the Masters of Wine.***

The Midwest Wine School currently offers the Intermediate (9-week course) and Advanced (16-week) level courses. Completion of both levels enables you to carry the distinction “WSET Certified”, as issued by the UK-based WSET.

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL - DOWNTOWN CHICAGO 2010 WINTER SESSION

Schedule: Saturdays, January 30 through March 20, 2010.
Time: 1:30 - 3:30 PM.
Location: The Cooking and Hospitality Institute of Chicago (CHIC), 361 W. Chestnut, Chicago.
Registration: $600*, includes course materials, exam and wines.
Discount: 10% discount ($540) for registration before January 18, 2010.
Exam: Saturday March 27, 2010 at 1:30 PM, same location as class. If for some reason you are unable to sit the exam on the scheduled date you can withdraw from the exam without penalty by March 5, 2010. Please call or email The Midwest Wine School and we will be happy to assist you. After the deadline we will have ordered the examinations and there will be a $150.00 fee to re-schedule your exam.

ADVANCED LEVEL - DOWNTOWN CHICAGO FALL SESSION

Coverage of wines and spirits of the world in considerable depth over 15 sessions. The Advanced Certificate is appropriate for those who have gone through the Intermediate Certificate level and/or have a good foundation of wine knowledge. The examination for the Advanced Certificate includes 50 multiple-choice questions, four short-answer questions and a blind tasting of one wine. Successful candidates receive the WSET Advanced Certificate.

Schedule: Sundays, September 13 through December 13, 2009. (No Class on November 29).
Time: 4:30-6:30 PM. In December, class will be longer to prepare for the test, 4:00-7:00 PM.
Location: The Cooking and Hospitality Institute of Chicago (CHIC), 361 W. Chestnut, Chicago.
Registration: $1050*, includes course materials, exam and wines.
Discount: 10% discount early registration before September 1, 2009.
Exam: 4:30 PM, December 20, same location as class. If for some reason you are unable to sit the exam on the scheduled date you can withdraw from the exam without penalty by November 16, 2009. *Registration and Cancellation Policy: Cancellations made more than 2 weeks prior to the start date will receive 90% of payment. For cancellations made within 2 weeks of the start date, a 50% refund is available. Less than one week prior to the start date will forfeit payment. Payments can be applied to future sessions within one year of the original payment.

HOME STUDY OPTION

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL

The WSET Intermediate Certificate Home Study packet includes:

  • Wines and Spirits: Looking Behind the Label, a 93-page textbook
  • 72-page review guide with self-study questions and answers cross-referenced to the textbook including space to record tasting notes
  • list of types of wines tasted in class
  • pronunciation guide

To earn the Intermediate Certificate of the Wine and Spirit Education Trust, you must successfully complete a one-hour examination with 50 multiple-choice questions on material covered in the study packet. The exam does not include wine-tasting.

Course Fee: $250 and $20.00 shipping and registration fee. Besides registration and materials, the course fee includes exam costs for a regularly-scheduled exam date in Chicago.

ADVANCED LEVEL

Our second level program covers the wines and spirits of the world in considerable depth. It is appropriate for those who have taken the Intermediate Certificate, or have a good foundation of wine knowledge and experience in wine tasting.

The WSET Advanced Certificate Home Study packet includes:

  • Exploring the World of Wines & Spirits, a 244-page textbook
  • 160-page review guide with self-study questions and answers cross-referenced to the textbook which includes maps and a place to record tasting notes
  • list of types of wines tasted in class

To earn the Advanced Certificate of the Wine and Spirit Education Trust, you must successfully complete a two-hour examination which includes 50 multiple-choice questions, four short-answer questions and a blind tasting of one wine. The exam tests your knowledge of material covered in the study packet.

Course Fee: $400 and $20.00 shipping and registration fee. The fee covers registration, materials, and the exam fee when taken on a regularly- scheduled date in Chicago.
